District Bar Association (DBA) elections were held across the province on Saturday. The results were announced between 10pm to midnight at several bars, followed by night-long jubilation celebrations by the winners.
In Multan, Yousaf Zubair andAnis Mehdi have been elected as President and General Secretary of District Bar. In Gujranwala, Irfan Syed was elected president with 658 votes and Rana Waqas Hasan the general secretary with 723 votes. Of the 839 registered voters, 735 used their votes.
However, things got disorderly when some candidates challenged some of the votes. An argument started between Malik Saqib Kareem and Farhan Tawakal Virk, both candidates for the post of general secretary. This was followed by a brawl and some bar members intervened. Nadeem Khokar was injured and taken to a hospital, where doctors treating him said that his arm was broken.
The argument had started when Kareem stopped Advocate Naveed from casting his vote saying that a vote had already been cast against the identity card number. The polling that began at 11am continued till 8pm. The results were announced two hours later with a delay apparently caused by the fighting incident.
In Faisalabad Bar, Mian Javaid Iqbal and Naveed Mukhtar Ghumman were elected as the president and general secretary, respectively.
Election Commission Chairman Chaudhary Irshad Ahmad said that Iqbal had polled 874 votes and his opponent Farrukh Gulzar Awan 865 votes. Ghumman was elected general secretary with 881 votes beating Rana Muazzam Abbas, who got 860 votes. Rana Nadeem Babar won the vice president’s post with 940 votes. His competitors Chaudhry Joseph and Javaid Sheikh got 441 and 366 votes, respectively.
A 10-member DBA executive committee was also elected unopposed as only 10 candidates had filed their nomination papers.
The executive committee now comprises Chaudhry Asif Hussain Hinjra, Chaudhry Muhammad Anwar Gujjar, Ahmad Saeed Wahla, Ali Abbas Sheikh, Muhammad Ramzan Dogar, Muhammad Zulqarnain, Kausar Hameed, Muhammad Ishtiaq Kallo, Sohail Kashif and Bilal Ahmad.
In Gujrat, Raja Muhammad Hanif won the president’s seat by getting 413 votes, Aftab Sohal won the vice-president’s seat with 378 votes and Yasir Mubarik became general secretary’s seat with 305 votes.
Chaudhry Faqir Saeen was elected the Daska Bar Association president with Chaudhry Shehzad Ali Dhillon as the vice president.
Mumtaz Noor Tangra was elected the Multan Bar Association president and Imran Rasheed Sulehri the general secretary.
In Dera Ghazi Khan, Arif Gurmani was elected as bar president and Yasir Khosa became general secretary.
At the Bahawalpur Bar, Khalid Daha was elected as president and Munawwar Bukhari as general secretary.
