Court awarded life term imprisonment to a man convicted of raping a sixth-grade child

A sessions court on Friday handed down life sentence to a man convicted of raping a sixth-grade child in Islamabad’s Sihala neighbourhood.
Ayaz Ahmed was booked by police for allegedly raping 12-year old Samana* on May 25, 2012.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (East) Wajid Ali awarded life sentence to Ahmed after he was found guilty of the charge.
Imtiaz Ahmed Soomro, who pleaded Samana’s case, said the girl was returning from school when she was picked and assaulted by Ahmed in Model Town Humak.
Initial medical examination of the victim confirmed she was sexually assaulted.
Later, the victim identified the convict during an identification parade at Adiala Jail.
According to Soomro, Ahmed, 25, was also booked in a few theft cases in the past.
The counsel pointed out that the report of the medical test was conducted after a passage of three years to the assault.
The prosecution lawyer said the family came from a poor socio-economic background and was unable to afford a lawyer to plead their case.
The family was eventually provided legal aid by an organisation working to protect children from sexual abuse.
“Incriminating evidence against the accused was the initial medical examination report, victim’s identification of the accused, and the victim’s and her father’s statements,” Soomro concluded.
Earlier on July 22, police busted a gang involved in the sexual assault on dozens of children in Kot Addu area of Punjab’s Muzaffargarh district.
The culprits involved in the assault during the last few months had reportedly been abducting children from different places of the district and later threw them by the roadside.
